How O2 contracts are structured

O2 splits a handset deal into two separate agreements: a device plan covering the cost of the handset, and an airtime plan covering calls, texts and data. The two run alongside each other and can have different lengths. The handset deals currently listed on this page run for 12, 24, 36 or 48 months.

This structure matters when comparing total cost. Paying off the device plan early ends that element of the bill, leaving only the airtime plan, and the device element is not subject to the annual increase described below. It also means the advertised monthly figure is the sum of two components that behave differently over the life of the contract.

Tesco Mobile and giffgaff both run on O2's network, so if you are choosing O2 for its coverage you can compare those two providers on the same signal at different price points.

Most current handsets support eSIM as well as a physical SIM card. Our guide to eSIMs explained covers how eSIM works, which phones support it, and what to check before ordering.

O2 price rises

O2 applies a fixed increase to the airtime element of the plan each April, stated in pounds and pence rather than linked to inflation. O2's published terms set this at £2.50 a month for voice plans and 75p a month for data-only and smartwatch plans. The device element of the bill is not increased.

One episode is worth knowing about when judging how reliable a stated future increase is. For April 2026, O2 raised the airtime increase to £2.50 from the £1.80 that had previously been written into customer contracts. Ofcom publicly stated that it was disappointed by the decision and that the move went against the spirit of rules requiring providers to set out increases in pounds and pence before customers sign up. Affected customers were given the right to exit without penalty, although any outstanding handset balance still had to be paid.

Ofcom's pounds and pence rules, introduced in January 2025, require providers to state increases clearly at the point of sale. The practical lesson from the 2026 increase is that a stated future rise sets an expectation rather than an absolute ceiling, so a longer contract carries more exposure than a shorter one.

Our guide to mid-contract price rises compares O2's increase against every other network we list, and explains what each one adds across a full contract.

Roaming with O2

O2 has retained inclusive roaming in European destinations rather than reintroducing daily charges, which distinguishes it from several other major UK networks. Your UK allowance applies in covered destinations, subject to a fair use data limit and to the terms of your specific plan.

Roaming terms differ between older and newer O2 plans and between destination zones, so confirm the limit and the covered country list against your intended plan before travelling. UK rules also cap data roaming spending unless you actively choose to raise the limit.

O2 Priority and other extras

O2 customers have access to O2 Priority, which offers early ticket access and retailer offers. Whether this carries any value depends entirely on whether you would use it, and it should not offset a materially higher total contract cost on its own.

O2 also offers flexible contract lengths on the device element, which allows the monthly cost to be tuned by extending or shortening the repayment period. Extending the device plan lowers the monthly figure and raises the total paid, so compare the full amount payable rather than the monthly headline.

What to compare on O2

On O2 specifically, separate the device element from the airtime element before comparing. The airtime element is what rises each April. The device element is fixed but determines most of the total cost.

Model the increase into the total. Across the 12, 24, 36 and 48 month handset deals currently listed, a £2.50 airtime rise can apply more than once on the longer terms. That difference is frequently larger than the gap between two deals that look close on the monthly figure.

If avoiding annual increases matters more to you than being on O2 directly, Tesco Mobile freezes the price on its Clubcard Prices deals and runs on the same network, and giffgaff guarantees against rises on its longer plans. If a lower monthly commitment is the priority, phones under £20 a month filters to cheaper deals across every network we list.

O2 frequently asked questions

How much does O2 increase prices each April?

O2's published terms set the annual April increase at £2.50 a month for voice plans and 75p a month for data-only and smartwatch plans. The increase applies to the airtime element only. The device element of the bill is not increased.

Why was O2 criticised over its 2026 price rise?

For April 2026 O2 raised the airtime increase to £2.50 from the £1.80 previously written into customer contracts. Ofcom stated publicly that it was disappointed and that the move went against the spirit of its rules on stating increases in pounds and pence before sign-up. Affected customers were given the right to exit without penalty, though any outstanding handset balance remained payable.

Does O2 charge for roaming in Europe?

O2 has retained inclusive European roaming rather than introducing daily charges, so your UK allowance applies in covered destinations subject to a fair use data limit. Terms vary between plans and zones, so confirm the limit and country list for your specific plan.

What is the difference between an O2 device plan and airtime plan?

The device plan covers the cost of the handset and the airtime plan covers calls, texts and data. They are separate agreements that can have different lengths. Paying off the device plan early ends that part of the bill, and only the airtime plan is subject to the annual April increase.

Which other networks use O2's coverage?

Tesco Mobile and giffgaff both run on O2's network as virtual operators, so coverage is the same across all three. They differ on price, contract terms, roaming allowances and support.

Sources and methodology

To compile this page we reviewed O2's published annual price increase terms and contract structure in August 2026, alongside our daily deal feed. We also reviewed Ofcom's published statement on O2's 2026 price rise, because that increase departed from the amount O2 had previously told customers to expect and is directly relevant to anyone comparing total contract cost. Coverage statements are attributed to O2 and have not been independently measured by us.

Deal prices on this page are drawn from our daily feed of retailer and network pricing. Network policy statements on this page were checked against the following sources in August 2026.

  • O2 annual price increase terms, for the £2.50 voice plan and 75p data-only monthly increases and confirmation that the device cost is not increased
  • Ofcom statement on O2 price rises, for the regulator response to the 2026 increase and the pounds and pence rules introduced in January 2025
  • O2 published roaming terms, for European roaming inclusion and fair use limits
  • Mobile Phone Finder daily deal feed, for handset availability, pricing and contract lengths
