Which network does Tesco Mobile use?

Tesco Mobile is a mobile virtual network operator running on O2's network, and has operated that way since launching in 2003. Coverage therefore matches O2 rather than being separate to it.

Tesco Mobile states that its customers receive 99 per cent UK population coverage on 4G, with 5G available across a growing number of towns and cities. If you already know how O2 performs where you live and work, you can expect broadly similar results here. giffgaff also runs on O2, so those two providers and O2 itself share the same underlying masts.

Coverage varies considerably by postcode on every network, so it is worth checking a specific address on Tesco Mobile's own coverage checker before committing to a contract.

Clubcard Prices and mid-contract price rises

This is the most significant difference between Tesco Mobile and most other providers, and it is frequently reported inaccurately elsewhere. Tesco Mobile does not apply a blanket price freeze across all of its tariffs. The position depends on which type of deal you take.

• Clubcard Prices deals. Tesco Mobile freezes the basic monthly usage price for the length of the minimum contract period. An annual April increase applies only once that minimum term has ended. A Clubcard is free to obtain.
• Non-Clubcard Prices deals. The basic monthly price receives an annual increase each April. For contracts taken from 17 December 2024 onwards, that increase is shown in pounds and pence at the point of sale, so the amount is known before you sign.
• Contracts taken before 17 December 2024. These follow the older inflation-linked formula of CPI plus 3.9 per cent.

The practical consequence is that a Clubcard Prices deal and a non-Clubcard deal advertised at the same monthly price will not cost the same across 24 or 36 months. Check which of the two you are looking at before treating the monthly figure as fixed.

Roaming with Tesco Mobile

Tesco Mobile includes roaming in 48 destinations across the EU and beyond under its Home From Home arrangement, using your existing UK allowance for calls, texts and data at no extra cost. Several major UK networks reintroduced EU roaming fees after Brexit, so this remains a genuine point of difference.

Data use abroad is capped rather than unlimited. Accounts with a safety buffer allow you to set your own spending limit and data cap. Tesco Mobile has applied a £40 monthly cap on data used abroad to older plans without a safety buffer. A fair use policy applies, so the arrangement is intended for travel rather than permanent use outside the UK.

How Tesco Mobile contracts are structured

Phones bought from Tesco Mobile come on an Anytime Upgrade plan, which splits the agreement into two parts: a credit agreement for the handset and a separate airtime plan for your allowance. Paying off the handset agreement early allows you to upgrade at any point rather than waiting for a fixed end date.

The handset deals currently listed on this page run for 12, 18, 24, 30 or 36 months. Longer terms lower the monthly figure but raise the total amount payable, which is why the comparison on this page shows the full contract cost alongside the monthly price. Clubcard points and Family Perks

Tesco Mobile customers collect Clubcard points on money spent with the network, which convert into vouchers usable against a Tesco shop. Clubcard vouchers are also worth double their face value when spent with Tesco Mobile itself.

Accounts with two or more lines qualify for Family Perks. Each line can choose one benefit per month from extra data, a bill discount, additional Clubcard points, or a discount on Tesco Mobile Protect insurance. For households moving several numbers at once, this can shift the total cost comparison against a cheaper single-line deal elsewhere.

What to compare on Tesco Mobile

The lowest advertised monthly price is rarely the cheapest option overall. Check the upfront payment, the monthly price, the contract length and the total amount payable across the full term together.

Three checks matter more on Tesco Mobile than on most networks. Confirm whether the deal is a Clubcard Prices deal, because that determines whether the price is frozen for the minimum term. Check the contract length, since the listed handset terms range from 12 to 36 months and change the total substantially. If more than one person in your household is switching, price the lines together rather than separately so that Family Perks are reflected.
