The Samsung Galaxy S23 is the compact flagship of Samsung's 2023 line, now a strong value buy since the S24 and later models arrived. One of the few small premium Androids on sale, every unit including the UK's uses the Snapdragon 8 Gen 2, so there is no weaker Exynos version.
The 6.1-inch Dynamic AMOLED 2X runs at 120Hz with a 1080 x 2340 resolution and quotes 1200 nits in high-brightness mode, with GSMArena measuring 1,198 nits and a 1,750-nit peak for HDR, protected by Gorilla Glass Victus 2.
The panel is bright, smooth and flat, and at 6.1 inches this is one of the few high-end phones that suits smaller hands.
The triple camera pairs a 50MP main sensor with OIS, a 10MP telephoto with 3x optical zoom and OIS, and a 12MP ultrawide, with a 12MP selfie camera and 8K video. A dedicated telephoto is a real advantage over cheaper phones.
The 10MP telephoto resolution is modest next to Ultra periscopes, so long-range detail is the clearest limit.
The 3,900mAh battery returned an active use score of 11:27 hours in GSMArena's lab, good for such a compact phone, with 25W wired charging at 50% in 30 minutes, plus 15W wireless and reverse wireless.
Charging is slow against fast-charging rivals, and the smaller cell means heavy users may need a top-up.
At 146.3 x 70.9 x 7.6mm and just 168g with Gorilla Glass Victus 2 on both faces, an aluminium frame and IP68 sealing, the S23 is compact and light while built to full flagship standard, in colours including Cream and Lavender.
There is no microSD slot or headphone jack, the usual flagship trade-offs.
The Snapdragon 8 Gen 2 with 8GB of RAM delivers full flagship speed, on Android 13 at launch and since updated, with Samsung DeX support included.
The chip is a couple of generations old now but remains very fast, so performance is not a concern.
