The Motorola Moto G04 is one of the cheapest phones Motorola sells, a basic 4G handset covering calls, messaging and light apps at rock-bottom money. It keeps a headphone jack and a dedicated microSD slot, but its defining limitation is software: Motorola confirms no Android upgrades are planned.

G04: Display

The 6.56-inch IPS LCD runs at 90Hz, which keeps scrolling smoother than the 60Hz screens common this cheap.

Resolution is 720 x 1612 at around 269 pixels per inch, so text and images look soft, and no brightness figure is listed to judge outdoor use.

G04: Camera

The single 16MP main camera with PDAF handles basic daylight snaps, with a 5MP selfie camera on the front, and both record 1080p at 30fps.

There is no ultrawide or secondary lens, so this is a simple point-and-shoot for records rather than results.

G04: Battery

The 5,000mAh battery is large for the price and, paired with the low-resolution screen and modest chip, should stretch to two days of light use.

Charging is slow at 15W with no wireless option, so overnight charging is the routine.

G04: Size, Weight and Build

At 163.5 x 74.5 x 8mm and 178.8g, the G04 is a plastic-bodied handset with a water-repellent coating but no formal IP rating, in four colours including Sea Green and Sunrise Orange.

The water-repellent design covers splashes only, and NFC is market-dependent, so UK buyers should confirm contactless support on the specific unit.

G04: Performance

The Unisoc T606 with up to 8GB of RAM covers calls, messaging and light browsing, and the dedicated microSD slot expands the small storage.

This is a 12nm chip with no 5G and UFS 2.2 storage, and crucially Motorola plans no OS upgrades, so it ships on Android 14 and stays there, the clearest reason for caution on a long-term purchase.

G04: Who Should Buy

Buy the Moto G04 as a first phone, a basic backup, or for someone whose needs stop at calls, messaging and light browsing. Buyers who want a sharper screen and any software support beyond launch should spend a little more on the Galaxy A16 5G, which adds an AMOLED screen, 5G and a six-year update window. Buyers comparing upfront prices will find current deals in the table above.
