Who makes IMO phones
IMO is a UK brand founded in 2016 and based in Staines upon Thames, trading under Verve Connect. The name stands for In My Opinion.
Its stated aim is to sell mobile phones at what it describes as pocket money prices, and the range is built around that rather than around specification. IMO has positioned its handsets at families, younger users and people buying a first or simpler smartphone, and its devices have been sold through UK retail partners rather than direct.
Tesco Mobile has been IMO's most significant retail partner, carrying handsets including the Dash 4G and, more recently, the Dash 4G Mini through both Tesco Mobile and Tesco stores. Availability through other partners has varied over time, and the range listed here is currently limited to a single handset on Tesco Mobile.
Feature phone or entry smartphone
IMO sells two different types of handset, and knowing which one you are looking at matters more than anything else here. The handset currently listed on this page, the Dash 4G Mini, is a feature phone.
Feature phones such as the Dash range handle calls and texts using physical keys, hold a charge for days rather than hours, and include large button models designed to be easier to use. They do not run apps. There is no WhatsApp, no banking app and no NHS app.
Entry level Android smartphones run the full app ecosystem but at the bottom of the specification range, which means slower performance and shorter software support than a mid-range handset.
Decide what the phone actually needs to do before comparing on price. If family contact happens through a messaging app, or if online banking matters, the handset listed here will not do the job however cheap it is, and you should look at an entry level Android smartphone instead.
Nokia and Doro sell handsets aimed at the same two needs, so it is worth comparing all three rather than choosing on price alone. Doro in particular designs specifically for older users, with assistance buttons and hearing aid compatibility that IMO does not match.
What to check at this price
Three checks matter more at the bottom of the market than anywhere else.
First, software support. IMO does not publish a range-wide update commitment in the way the larger manufacturers do. The handset listed here is a feature phone, so it does not receive Android updates at all.
